Ken Wylie Named to MSI Board

Mountain Spirit Institute names Ken Wylie to Board of Directors

Ken Wylie

Ken Wylie, a veteran certified mountain guide from Cochrane Alberta, Canada with years as an experiential educator and program manager at Canadian universities as well as Outward Bound Canada and the Outward Bound USA, has recently been named to the board of directors at Mountain Spirit Institute based in the U.S. and New Zealand.  In addition to helping guide the U.S. organization, Wylie has plans to launch a  Mountain Spirit Institute Canada where he will create mountain programs based on the mission statement. Mr. Wylie and founder Randall Richards along with fellow board members are in discussions about also collaborating on mountain programs in the U.S,  New Zealand and possibly the Alps.

Says Wylie, “I am drawn to Mountain Spirit Institute because of the organization’s vision. MSI has the vision for the 21st century in my estimation, and is what I have been searching for in my career.” Adds Wylie, “The mountains are an experience that can change people’s lives, but are more often than not just another consumable, another peak to check off the list. What people need now more than ever,  is to connect and MSI helps them do that.”

Ken has a long history in outdoor guiding and instructing. An internationally certified mountain guide under the International Federation of Mountain Guide Association and The Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, he is widely recognized as one of Canada’s leading outdoor professionals who has guided around the world and taught at a number of Canadian universities including Mount Royal University,  University of Calgary, and Thompson Rivers University . He has been a program manager and staff trainer for Outward Bound Canada, Pacific Crest Outward Bound, and a guide for various guide services.

Ken is currently writing a book about a 2003 avalanche in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia, Canada in which 7 people lost their lives. Ken was also buried and the experience has brought him to a spiritual place, giving him a unique outlook on not only the mountains, but the guiding and certification process.  His razor sharp perspective on life in the mountains brings a wealth of wisdom, humor and skills to MSI.

Richards and Wylie worked for Pacific Crest Outward Bound.. Later the two, after having been mountain guiding for other companies, crossed paths when hired again by Outward Bound as contract staff trainers for an Alpine Skills Trainings and Assessments course. They re-connected again when Wylie inquired about getting involved with MSI last summer.

Says Mountain Spirit Institute founder Randall Richards, “We’re thrilled to have Ken on board. I’ve been carrying the torch for this vision along with other board members such as Bob Stremba, Ed.D,  for years, and it’s great to have Ken’s vision and laser-like passion for fostering people’s spiritual growth while in the mountains.” Adds Richards, “It brings me back to why I started MSI,  and I love the idea of collaborating with an old friend.”
